VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Canadian firefighters made some progress battling blazes in a British Columbia region known for picturesque resort towns, but hundreds more raging across the province have pushed thousands from their homes and flames also threatened a provincial capital hundreds of kilometers (miles) to the north. There’s “finally a bit of a glimmer of hope,” West Kelowna Fire Chief Jason Broland told a news conference of the progress being made Sunday in the Lake Okanagan region, which is known as a summer destination for families.“The weather has allowed us to make progress,” he said, adding that crews were able to conduct more traditional firefighting techniques such as putting out hot spots. More than 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) away, firefighters fought flames bearing down on Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories. The fire remained about 15 kilometers (nine miles) from the city, which was left virtually empty after nearly all of its 20,000 re...Need to leave kids home alone as the school year gets underway? As the school year begins for some students in Northern Virginia, some parents may be considering leaving their child home alone before or after school for the first time.In Virginia, there are no specific rules about how old a child should be when they’re left alone. But Twana Johnson, Program Manager for Fairfax County Children, Youth and Families Division said there are child supervision guidelines. She said children should not be left alone until they are at least nine and, if you are leaving an older child alone with younger siblings, the older child should be at least 10 years old.Johnson said parents should ask the question, “Is the child ready to be left home alone, and are you the parent ready to leave the child home alone?”If an older child is left with younger siblings, Johnson said to ask: “Is that child ready to watch that younger sibling, and is that sibling ready to listen to that older child?”She said parents should consider holding a fam...Stock market today: Wall Street is holding a bit steadier after its third straight losing week

ATLANTA (AP) — A federal judge has blocked the state of Georgia from enforcing a new law that banned doctors from starting hormone therapy for transgender people under the age of 18.In a ruling issued Sunday, U.S. District Court Judge Sarah Geraghty granted a preliminary injunction sought by the parents of several transgender children. At least 22 states have now enacted laws restricting or banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors, and most of those states face lawsuits. The Georgia law, Senate Bill 140, still allows doctors to prescribe puberty-blocking medications, and it allows minors who are already receiving hormone therapy to continue. But the law bans any new patients under 18 from starting hormone therapy. It also bans most gender-affirming surgeries for transgender people under 18. Geraghty’s ruling did not block the surgery ban.During two days of hearings earlier this month, Geraghty heard conflicting testimony about the safety and benefits of horm...Greek coast guard rescues scores of migrants from boats drifting in the Aegean Sea
