Potholes are gone, but why are the new sections of 680 still so bumpy?: Roadshow

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:43:26 GMT

Q: Interstate 680 was repaved south of 580 up to 580. It appears to be concrete and is bumpier than the old section of concrete (which needs replacing) from 580 up to the Alcosta overpass. Why is the new section rougher than the old section? Will the new surface be covered with another layer in the future or be reworked to remove the roughness?Denny Smith, PleasantonA: And…Q: My wife and I took northbound 680 from 880 to Walnut Creek recently. The new lanes from 84 to Sunol (approximately) are an absolute ABOMINATION. The potholes are gone. But the entire surface is ridiculously rough. Exacerbating this section are fairly-closely-spaced (10-20 feet apart) mini-rumble-strips running perpendicular to the roadway. We hope that this work is just the start and that, when finished, it will be much better.Roy Clifton, SunnyvaleA: I heard about this from several people. For northbound 680, crews are still placing precast concrete pavement on the road, including the area near the 680 t...

California woman’s greenwashing lawsuit against Delta Air Lines aims to set a precedent

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:43:26 GMT

By Kendra Pierre-Louis | BloombergAs tranquil instrumental music plays over gauzy images of nature, a woman’s voice-over begins. “Isn’t it a paradox,” she wonders aloud, “that the love for this world that gets us out in it, sometimes leaves behind the things that can harm it? Flight by flight, we broaden our views. We gain new perspectives. And now, flight by flight, we can make a difference.”The commercial, released by Delta Air Lines Inc. in 2021, goes on to tout the company’s commitment to “becoming the world’s first carbon-neutral airline on a global basis.” It’s a pledge Delta debuted in February 2020, alongside a plan to spend $1 billion over the next decade mitigating its greenhouse-gas emissions. Now that pledge is the focal point of a class-action lawsuit arguing that Delta’s carbon-neutrality claims amount to little more than greenwashing.“Delta’s representations of carbon neutrality are provably false and misleading,” reads the lawsuit filed on May 30 on behalf of any Cal...

Why New England and the upper Midwest could have a higher fire risk than the West this year

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:43:26 GMT

By Ella Nilsen | CNNUnusually hot and dry northeastern and upper Midwest states are forecast to be wildfire hotspots this summer, while historically fire-prone Western states, including California, have a lower-than-normal predicted wildfire risk.A summer wildfire outlook from the National Interagency Fire Center paints an atypical picture, with the highest potential for wildfires largely in the northernmost parts of the country. New England states including Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, as well as parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and nearly all of Michigan – along with areas in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest – are also facing an elevated risk of fire. The situation is “pretty unique,” Allan Hepworth, a US Forest Service wildland fire analyst for the Northeast, told CNN.It’s “been a long time (since) California and the Southwest have been green on the map when the Northeast has been red,” Hepworth added. While many factors are driving the fire risk this year, the biggest is prolong...

Amid uncertainty over his own future at Paris Saint-Germain, Kylian Mbappé has hit out at the treatment of Lionel Messi by the club and French soccer in general following the high-profile departure of the Argentina star.Messi signed for Major League soccer franchise Inter Miami last week after rejecting a contract extension at PSG, bringing to a close a two-year spell with the French team.Messi’s final months at PSG were marked by jeers from fans as his form dipped after he helped Argentina win the World Cup, and a suspension by the club after an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia.“We’re talking about potentially the best player in the history of soccer,” Mbappé said in an interview with Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. “It’s never good news when someone like Messi leaves.“Personally I haven’t really understood why so many people were relieved that he was leaving. We’re talking about Messi: he should be respected but instead he didn’t get the respect he deserved in France. It’...

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:43:26 GMT

Miami Police said a man was arrested Tuesday for jumping in front of President Trump’s motorcade as he was leaving the courthouse in Miami. Police said 61-year-old Domenic Santana went too far and was the only person to be arrested during Trump’s visit. According to Santana he simply wanted to get his message across and he believes he did. The number of Donald Trump supporters greatly outnumbered the critics Tuesday afternoon during the peaceful demonstrations.“One individual, who was clearly not in his right mind, jumps out in front of the motorcade to make some point for himself and he was taken down immediately without anyone else getting hurt,” said Miami Police Chief Manny Morales. Santana spent the night behind bars and now faces three charges, including disorderly conduct, obstruction of traffic and resisting an officer without violence. He spoke to our 7News cameras as bonded out of jail Wednesday morning.“I’m getting the message out....
