Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 03:04:31 GMT

In the days leading into the NFL draft, most of the heavy lifting in terms of scouting and building a draft board is completed. The last sets of decisions, however, can be the ones that make or break draft classes. Broncos general manager George Paton, coach Sean Payton and their staffs have spent the past several days working through “clusters” of players they see as having similar value. Or forward, you can. If you choose to move forward, it’s because there is someone you really like. If you chose to move back, there is a feeling that maybe the player we would select at the current slot, we can select a few picks later.“If the value is right relative to a trade, you can always acquire picks.”Players slide up and down the board regularly as teams work through their process, but in the bigger, public pic...

WASHINGTON (AP) — When President Barack Obama flew to California to dedicate a national monument to Latino labor leader Cesar Chavez, a group of the activist's relatives were invited to pose for photos with the president. Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Chavez's granddaughter, hung back. As a member of Obama's staff, she had traveled with the official party to the event, but she did not want to call attention to herself.Only when Obama's senior adviser, Valerie Jarrett, insisted did Rodriguez reluctantly step forward, barely making it into the frame. “I said, ‘Julie, you have to be up there with your family,’” said Jarrett, who was Rodriguez’s boss in the White House Office of Public Engagement. “And she said, ‘No, I’m staff today.’” White House staffers are often of a type, hard-charging strivers who crave their own sliver of the limelight or even trade on a famous name. Rodriguez has been a clear exception. In her second tour serving a Democratic president, she's served as director of int...

NFL Draft preview: Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez leads our list of top Pac-12 prospects

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 03:04:31 GMT

Christian Gonzalez’s football journey has taken him from a childhood in The Colony, Tex., to Boulder and Eugene for college and, this week, to Kansas City for the NFL Draft. That atypical route (two schools in the same conference) could bring an unprecedented conclusion: If draft projections are correct, Gonzalez will become the highest-drafted Pac-12 cornerback this century. Not since Arizona’s Chris McAlister was selected 10th by the Ravens in 1999 has the conference produced a top-10 pick at the highly-valued position.Over the past 23 drafts, eight cornerbacks have been selected in the first round, none higher than No. 11 (Washington State’s Marcus Trufant in 2003).Gonzalez, who spent two years at Colorado before transferring to Oregon for the 2022 season, is considered one of the top-two cornerbacks alongside Devon Witherspoon of Illinois.Several projections slot him in the No. 7 (Raiders) to No. 10 (Eagles) range and the object of a potential draft-night trade.
