Bundle of birthday wishes given to WWII veteran turning 100

DENVER (KDVR) -- A big bundle of birthday wishes from around the country was delivered to a retired World War II veteran who turned 100 on Saturday.U.S. Naval Commander Koert Voorhees served in the South Pacific during the war. His family threw him a huge celebration on Sunday and asked the organization Nothing but Love Notes to gather handwritten birthday wishes to deliver to him as a surprise. 90-year-old donates 90th gallon of blood Denver Police Officer and Navy veteran Jacob Odendahl was the one who made the surprise delivery to Voorhees. His wife, Connie, also turned 100 years old in April, and the organization said it planned to gather a bundle of love notes for her as well. A man was arrested Saturday in connection with a shooting in Myles Standish State Forest last month that left one man dead. John Geovanni Pires Monteiro Macedo, 20, was arrested in New Bedford without incident.Monteiro Macedo is accused of shooting and killing Robert Aponte-Flores, 25, on July 12. JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — At least two buildings have been destroyed and residents of others have been evacuated in Juneau after flooding caused by a release of water from a glacier-dammed lake, officials said Sunday.The Mendenhall River flooded Saturday because of a major release from Suicide Basin above Alaska’s capital city, a news release from the City and Borough of Juneau said.Video posted on social media showed towering trees behind a home falling into the rushing river as the water ate away at the bank. OAK PARK, Ill. — Two people were injured, one critically, after officials said at least one of them touched an energized CTA rail at a stop in Oak Park.According to officials, the two people and a group of friends were going to Lollapalooza when they decided to jump down onto the tracks to take pictures and a man touched an energized rail.
