“Super El Niño” likely this winter, NCAR experimental prediction system says

Current El Niño conditions that began a couple months early this year could develop into one of the strongest events on record this winter, according to an experimental research prediction system from the National Science Foundation’s National Center for Atmospheric Research.If the forecast system is right, this El Niño would be comparable to the major El Niño of 1997 and 1998.“Our forecast system has shown that it can do a remarkably good job of accurately hindcasting past El Niño events when we’ve tested it using historical data, which gives us high confidence in this forecast,” NCAR scientist Stephen Yeager, who helped lead the modeling effort, said in a news release.El Niño events, which usually peak in December, are characterized by warmer-than-average temperatures in the Tropical Pacific Ocean. A man convicted of murder in Los Angeles County was fatally stabbed in North Kern State Prison by two fellow inmates, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.Josafat Bonifacio, 32, was attacked just after 12:30 p.m. Thursday, allegedly by 30-year-old Andrew Jimenez and 28-year-old Anthony Rivera, the CDCR said in a news release. The two men are believed to have been armed with "an inmate-manufactured weapon," and Bonifacio "sustained multiple stab wounds," the release said.He died about an hour after the stabbing while he was on the way to the hospital.Bonifacio arrived at the prison on May 30 after he was sentenced to serve life with the possibility of parole for second-degree murder. Costco shoppers could soon pay more for their yearly memberships.During an earnings call on Tuesday, company CFO Richard Galanti said that membership prices are expected to increase but didn’t disclose when the price hike will take effect.“It’s a question of when, not if,” Galanti said during the call. “You will see it happen at some point. We can’t really tell you if it's in our plans or not. A man was killed after he crashed his motorcycle on Thursday evening. Officers with the Simi Valley Police and crews with the Ventura County Fire Department responded to the collision on the 1700 block of Madera Road at around 8 p.m, according to a news release from police.When first responders arrived at the scene they found a "severe collision" involving a single motorcyclist.That person was transported to Los Robles Hospital where he was declared deceased. He was identified as 21-year-old Marcus Evans of Simi Valley.
